Poontang - Bio

Poontang
1999 - 2002

Formed in the last few months of 1999 Poontang were a metal band who tried to combine their love of metal and funk and almost got there.

Original members Jason Leigh (Vocals, from Root 13), John Lee (Bass, from Shyanglo), Jonathan Wells (Drums) and Dave White (Guitar, Krud), met at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology (RCAT). They decided to start a band taking influences from artists suck as Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Mr Bungle and Incubus to name but a few.
The first show was played at Rotherham's Wellington Boot supporting Sheffield metallers Mine.
Shortly after the band recorded their first offering to the world 'Funk Metal Racket' with a sleeve imitating the movie 'Full Metal Jacket'. The demo was recorded at the music department studio of RCAT at lunchtimes and any time the studio wasn't in use with kind permission from tutors 'Pineapple' Pete Goodwin, Steve Gascoigne and 'Postman' Pete Smith.
The five track CD was banded around and secured the band many local slots including a stint at the Oakwood Beer Festival Battle of the Bands 2000 where the band disrobed for their last song.

Needing to fill out the sound the band enlisted Jody Beighton from Rotherham band Hood, who had recently disbanded, on guitar duties.
Poontang quickly went back into the studio to record a follow up demo called 'All You Can Eat'. This time in a more professional environment of Orion Studios with Steve Ellis at the helm. Over a weekend the band quickly hammered out a four track EP featuring the crowd pleasing 'Redpool' and the experimental 'Freaky Funky Thing'.

After entering a competition with the CD, to play an up and coming showcase in London, Poontang were contacted and asked to play at London's Mean Fiddler (London Astoria 2 or LA2) which they duly did. The show was filmed for the Mean Fiddler website and was kept online for another 12 months. However no joy came from the gig.

In late 2000 John Lee was replaced by Chris Bingham from Bodybug, on bass.
Not disheartened another studio session was booked again with Steve Ellis at Orion Studios. This time a two track split EP was recorded with Rotherham locals Milkweed and tentatively named Milkypoo. Both bands played shows together throughout South Yorkshire in support of the CD.

By mid 2001 Jody left the band to start his own Grindcore band Psalm. The band decided to stay as a four-piece and carry on writing and recording.
Poontang recorded their last offering to the world, again in Orion Studios towards the end of 2001. The three track EP, called 'poon-tang kompakt-disc' showed a new side to the band including more jazz/easy listening tracks as 'Wish You Weren't Here!' and the heavily Mr Bungle influenced 'Video Circus'.

More shows were played but enthusiasm was lacking and the band played their last show at Brampton Hall, Wath Upon Dearne and split in early 2002.

Krud 1998

Krud - Bio

Krud 1997 - 2000

Biography

Formed in 1997 by Old Hall school friends Dave White (Guitar/Vocals) and Nathan Gee (Bass). The band went through a few different names such as Pie, Mellowroach and Nutbar before finally settling on the name Krud. After playing guitar and bass in their bedrooms and writing a few punk pop type tunes, Dave and Nathan met drummer Joe Dakin through their younger brothers at school. They rehearsed at Greasborough town hall weekly after realising that Joe's bedroom was too small.

After seeing Nathan's brother Tyson, perform at a school show in his briefly lived covers/original band Void playing guitar and singing (also featuring Mark Williams of Pelican 'Ead) they asked him to join on vocals. Drummer Joe Dakin was also replaced by Void drummer Colin Walder and went on to join metal band After the Fact.

The first rehearsal of Krud took place at Peaches and Green rehearsal space in Rotherham town centre, run by a friend of the Gee brothers mother, Genya Johnson. After a couple of weekly visits Krud were asked to play at the weekly Charters Arms shows that were put on by Genya Johnson's youth music project The Get Sorted Crew.

After more shows at the Charters Arms, The Wellington Boot (the new venue used by The Get Sorted Crew) and the Rotherham Arts Centre, Krud had another change of drummers, this time recruiting drummer Mike Parkin. A school friend of Tyson.
Later Krud also enrolled Dale Horner on guitar and backing vocals, making the band a five piece with three guitarists.

In the summer of 1998 Krud recorded their first demo CD at Jump Studios in Sheffield with Steve Hulme. Although the band weren't happy with the outcome and felt it was too clean cut compared with the large three guitar sound they had live, they burned the CD's and had covers and posters made to promote the band. The end of the year saw Krud play throughout South Yorkshire. Most notably at the Boardwalk in Sheffield supporting up and coming bands on the touring circuit.
Not long after the CD was recorded Krud changed drummers again and enlisted Daniel Balmer of recently defunct locals Reeper.
It also saw the band make friends with Sheffield metal stalwarts Innocent Child and play shows in support of them.

1999 Krud decided to go into the studio again and record some new songs that now reflected the bands sound and try and capture the heavy/melodic sound they had now honed with the help of Dale's songwriting and vocals bringing another dimension to the band. In early 1999 Dave left the band and went on to form funk metal band Poontang. Krud carried on and went into the studio to record their second CD Krud.co.uk
This embodied the sound the band were looking for and continued to gig and write on the back of the CD making regular appearances at the Boardwalk and Deep End in Sheffield.

By the end of 2000 the band changed their name to Leon and carried on with a new darker melodic sound, focusing on vocal harmony and layers of effects as their defining sound.

Bodybug - Album Art

Selected Artwork for Bodybug "Because This Is All There Is" (2002), by Reuben Gotto @ DSN

Bodybug - Bio

Bodybug 1998 – 2002

Originally called Bug, Bodybug name is a derivation Soulfly (Max Cavalera post-Sepultura band). The original objective was to be a metal band – straight, heavy, horrible. The band was founded by Chris Bing Garcia and Luke Morton after meeting at the Get Sorted practice rooms. At the time, Luke was drumming for Insomnya, for whom Greg Turner played guitar. Sam Woodcock, who was at that time playing bass for Hangman’s Joke was looking to play in a heavier band than the Nu-Metal based that his band was doing.

The first demo in ’98 (...Why is cunt c**sored? – 3 tracks) was recorded by Steve Ellis (who would record all Bodybug’s material throughout) and appeared only in tape format.

The second demo “Form to a Scab” was the last recording as Bug. It was this demo which established contact with many underground ‘zines and promoters as well as bands, including Reuben Gotto then of Subvert and Blank Canvas Records.

It was at this point that Luke left Bug, the name changed and John Wells (of Poontang) joined.

The next 2 demos(DIY – 2 tracks/Universes and Civilisations on my belly – 4 tracks*) are when Bodybug really defined themselves and with their sound developing a growing relationship developed with Reuben Gotto and Blank Canvas.

Though never embarking on formal touring, they played extensively in England with high points being several shows at The Crown in Worcester (run by Lockjaw Records/Tribute to Nothing crew) and several appearances in some of London’s most prominent metal venues (Barfly/Garage).

“Because this is all there is...” (released 27th May 2002) was the culmination of Bodybug’s efforts. In the late summer of 2002 - a mere few months after the release of the album – Bodybug ceased to be as an entity. Contributing factors to the dissipation were a lack of money, inconsistent work ethic and a lack of confidence in general amongst the members.
