Biography
Formed in 1997 by Old Hall school friends Dave White (Guitar/Vocals) and Nathan Gee (Bass). The band went through a few different names such as Pie, Mellowroach and Nutbar before finally settling on the name Krud. After playing guitar and bass in their bedrooms and writing a few punk pop type tunes, Dave and Nathan met drummer Joe Dakin through their younger brothers at school. They rehearsed at Greasborough town hall weekly after realising that Joe's bedroom was too small.
After seeing Nathan's brother Tyson, perform at a school show in his briefly lived covers/original band Void playing guitar and singing (also featuring Mark Williams of Pelican 'Ead) they asked him to join on vocals. Drummer Joe Dakin was also replaced by Void drummer Colin Walder and went on to join metal band After the Fact.
The first rehearsal of Krud took place at Peaches and Green rehearsal space in Rotherham town centre, run by a friend of the Gee brothers mother, Genya Johnson. After a couple of weekly visits Krud were asked to play at the weekly Charters Arms shows that were put on by Genya Johnson's youth music project The Get Sorted Crew.
After more shows at the Charters Arms, The Wellington Boot (the new venue used by The Get Sorted Crew) and the Rotherham Arts Centre, Krud had another change of drummers, this time recruiting drummer Mike Parkin. A school friend of Tyson.
Later Krud also enrolled Dale Horner on guitar and backing vocals, making the band a five piece with three guitarists.
In the summer of 1998 Krud recorded their first demo CD at Jump Studios in Sheffield with Steve Hulme. Although the band weren't happy with the outcome and felt it was too clean cut compared with the large three guitar sound they had live, they burned the CD's and had covers and posters made to promote the band. The end of the year saw Krud play throughout South Yorkshire. Most notably at the Boardwalk in Sheffield supporting up and coming bands on the touring circuit.
Not long after the CD was recorded Krud changed drummers again and enlisted Daniel Balmer of recently defunct locals Reeper.
It also saw the band make friends with Sheffield metal stalwarts Innocent Child and play shows in support of them.
1999 Krud decided to go into the studio again and record some new songs that now reflected the bands sound and try and capture the heavy/melodic sound they had now honed with the help of Dale's songwriting and vocals bringing another dimension to the band. In early 1999 Dave left the band and went on to form funk metal band Poontang. Krud carried on and went into the studio to record their second CD Krud.co.uk
This embodied the sound the band were looking for and continued to gig and write on the back of the CD making regular appearances at the Boardwalk and Deep End in Sheffield.
By the end of 2000 the band changed their name to Leon and carried on with a new darker melodic sound, focusing on vocal harmony and layers of effects as their defining sound.
